Erzurum

The Province of Erzurum is, in the Eastern Anatolia Region, to the east of the country. The surface area of the province of Erzurum is the fourth largest in Turkey. The city has a population of 361 235 inhabitants. Erzurum’s economy is heavily based on stockbreeding. Industries largely consist of manufacturing of forestry, agriculture, husbandry, chemistry, textile and mining products. There are 81 active industrial plants in the province, most of them located at the central district of Erzurum, and are small and medium enterprises. The largest economy, in recent years, has been the university. Atatürk University is one of the largest universities in Turkey, having more than forty-thousand students. Tourism, also, provides a large proportion of the province's income. Tourist activities include skiing, rafting and mountaineering. Skiing activities are centered on Palandöken Mountain. City of Erzurum is composed of one center district. This center consists of 4 lower level municipalities and every municipality has their own mayor which has a directly elected for 5 years. Erzurum’s Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) covers an area of 1 191 km2 with a population of 389 619.
