Ljubljana

The city of Ljubljana is the capital and largest city in the Republic of Slovenia. 258,873 inhabitants live in an area of 163.8 km2. Ljubljana is a city of culture with numerous theatres, museums, galleries and one of the oldest philharmonic societies in the world. Ljubljana is also an important political, trade, business, transport, exhibition, scientific and educational centre in Slovenia and home to the main national governmental institutions. The city's industrial firms are among Slovenia’s leading exporters, followed by trade and financial and other business services. Ljubljana has several picturesque parks and wooded areas, some of which stretch right into the city centre. The city is an attractive tourist destination. The highest municipal decision-making body is the City Council comprising 45 members elected by direct, secret elections, as is the mayor, who represents the City Council. The city of Ljubljana forms part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region, which covers an area of 2,555 km2 and a population of 488,364.
