Faro

The city of Faro is the administrative centre for the whole of the Algarve region with a population of more than 58 000 inhabitants. The city has both Arab and Roman influences and is the home of the Ria Formosa lagoon, a natural reserve of over 17 000 hectares and a stopping place for hundreds of different birds during the spring and autumn migratory periods.

The city has Portugal's second most important international airport which combining with various beaches promotes the development of significant tourism activities.

The municipality of Faro is composed of 6 freguesias (LAU2 units). The city has an executive body (câmara municipal) and a legislative body (assembleia municipal), both composed of local elected members who represent the local population.
