Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada is located in São Miguel, one of the nine Islands of the Azores archipelago, which is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,500 km from Lisbon. Ponta Delgada has a population of 66,000. Ponta Delgada’s economy is based on the service sector, although industrial production and fishing also play an important role. Nearly 50% of all companies in the Azores are located in Ponta Delgada. Served by an international airport and port, the city is the main gateway to the Azores. An autonomous region of Portugal since 1976, the Azores has a Legislative Assembly and a Government directly elected by the local population. The municipality of Ponta Delgada is composed of 22 freguesias (LAU2 units). The city has an executive body (câmara municipal) and a legislative body (assembleia municipal), both composed of local elected members. No larger urban zone (LUZ) was defined for this city.
