Coimbra

The city of Coimbra is located in central west Portugal, relatively close to the country’s two metropolitan areas: Lisboa and Porto. Coimbra has a population of 148,000 inhabitants. Coimbra is chiefly known for its famous university, which was founded in 1290. The public sector, in particular health and public administration, also plays an important role in the city’s economy. The service sector dominates the city’s employment. Coimbra municipal council is composed of 31 freguesias (LAU2 units). The city has an executive body (câmara municipal) and a legislative body (assembleia municipal), both composed of local elected members. Coimbra is also the capital of Coimbra district, where a civil governor (governador civil) represents the central government. No larger urban zone (LUZ) was defined for this city.
