Funchal

Funchal is the capital city of the Madeira archipelago, which is located about 500 km from continental Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean. The city had a population of 104,000. Tourism is one of the most important sectors in the city. This is reflected in the main activities: hotels, construction, transportation and communications. The city also has a large port and trades in sugarcane, Madeira wine, bananas, embroidery, reed furniture and fishing. Remittances from people who have emigrated are also important to the economy. Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal with its own governing bodies. These bodies are located in Funchal and directly elected by the local population. The municipality of Funchal is composed of 10 freguesias (LAU2 units). The city has an executive body (câmara municipal) and a legislative body (assembleia municipal), both composed of local elected members. No larger urban zone (LUZ) was defined for this city.
