Katowice

Katowice is located in the southern part of Poland and is the capital city of Slaskie Voivodship. The city has a population of 327,222 and forms part of a large conurbation in Poland’s urban industrial core. The economy of Katowice has traditionally been based on hard coal mining, steel and the power industry. Nowadays these sectors are still important but employment is instead concentrated in the service sector. Katowice also plays a significant role in financial and property markets and the city is an important hub for trade and commerce. Katowice offers highly specialised medical care and is regarded as an important educational and cultural centre. Katowice is governed by the mayor, three deputy mayors and the city council consisting of 31 members. Katowice is a part of Larger Urban Zone with the population of 2,746,460 that covers an area of 2,651 km2 and includes the smaller Urban Audit city Zory.
