Nijmegen

Nijmegen is the oldest city of the Netherlands and has 160,000 inhabitants. In 2005 it celebrated its 2000th year of existence. The city is located in the province of Gelderland in the east of the country, near the German border.

Nijmegen is famous for the International Four Days Marches Nijmegen, an annual walking event, and the Four Days Festivities with more than 150 terraces in the centre of Nijmegen and more than 200 artists entertaining over a million visitors.

The city has a wide variety of institutions providing higher professional and scientific education in many fields. It has the fourth largest university in the Netherlands. The city has about 15,000 students and many highly educated workers.

The majority of the working population are employed in healthcare, education and the service sector but the city also has a number of major manufacturing companies. Nijmegen has increasingly developed into a city of knowledge, health and technology.

The region Arnhem-Nijmegen, a metropolitan area, has more than 700,000 inhabitants.
