Liepãja

Liepaja is situated in the southwest of Latvia, on the banks of the Baltic Sea. Founded by fishermen in 1253, nowadays it accounts for a population of approximately 87,000. Liepaja has always been a strategic location for transport and commerce. With an ice-free port all year round and a network of railways and motorways, Liepaja is well connected to the major industrial regions of Russia and countries around the Baltic Sea and the Nordic Sea. Industry is based around the manufacturing of basic metals, textiles and food products. Liepaja has many tools for development and one of the most promising is the Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which offers many tax incentives and other forms of assistance for companies wanting to establish their business on SEZ territory. The Mayor and 14 councillors govern the city. The total area of Liepaja Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) covers 3653 km2 and accounts for 135,000 inhabitants.
