Panevežys

Panevežys is situated in the North of Lithuania, on the banks of the river Nevežis. It is the fifth largest city in Lithuania with 119,749 inhabitants. It is also the regional centre of the Panevežys County. The city is situated in an ample geographical position offering good transport links to other Lithuanian cities and the city of Kaliningrad. The Via Baltica highway runs through the city and connects Panevežys with many Scandinavian and West European countries. Panevežys is an industrial city. The production of radio, TV, communication equipment, textiles, non-metal mineral products, wood, furniture, food and beverages dominate in economic activities. The overall responsibility for running the city is with the City Council, the Mayor and the 30 elected members. The territory of the city of Panevežys embraces part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) with the population of 162,604 covering an area of 2228.4 km2.
