Trieste

Trieste is the economic and cultural regional capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located in north-eastern Italy. Trieste, renowned as a port city, has a population of 205,356.

The Port of Trieste is today the most important centre worldwide for the trade of coffee and plays a strategic key role in trade with northern and eastern Europe.

The city is economically driven by the shipping trade, as well as the petro-chemical, metallurgy, and paper industries. Large banking and insurance companies are concentrated in Trieste.

Tourism also plays an important role in the city’s economy.

Trieste is part of a larger urban zone (LUZ) of 236,457 inhabitants covering an area of 211.8 km2.

The municipal council of Trieste which governs and administers the city is made up of 41 elected members including the Mayor.
