Catania

Catania is one of the largest cities of the Italian island of Sicilia. Its is located on the east coast of the island, at the foot of the active volcano Monte Etna and has a population of 298,957.

Catania's economy is characterised by its large sea port and extended railway connections which have made the city an important trading centre. It also has a long tradition of well-established manufacturing enterprises and industrial companies in all sectors. Extensive urban refurbishment and reconstruction in the historic quarters of the city took place in the 1960s.

Catania is part of a larger urban zone (LUZ) of over 577, 436 inhabitants covering an area of 585 km2.

The municipal council of Catania which governs and administers the city made up of 46 elected members including the Mayor.

The institutional setting in Sicily differs from the rest of Italy as the region of Sicilia has autonomous status.
