Galway

Galway is the regional capital of the Western region of the Republic of Ireland. It had a population of 66,000 according to the results of the 2002 Census of Population. The City boasts top level educational and medical facilities. Strong indigenous clusters are evident in the fields of biomedical engineering, electronics and software development. There are fifteen industrial business parks in Galway, which include a significant number of information technology companies. Also, much of the city’s income derives from the tourist industry. Galway City Council plays a major role in the development of the city. The council has fifteen directly elected members representing three local electoral areas. The city manager and his staff are responsible for the day-to-day administration of the council. No larger urban zone (LUZ) was defined for this city.
