Limerick

Limerick, comprising the legally defined administrative area of Limerick City and its suburbs in counties Limerick and Clare, had a population of 87,000 according to the results of the 2002 Census of Population. Limerick is the fastest growing commercial and industrial centre in provincial Ireland. The city is competitive in the areas of food processing, aviation and R&D into the growth of technology based enterprise. As an administrative and regional capital, Limerick contains a large concentration of office development and supports a wide range of medical and educational facilities. The Council has 17 directly elected members, representing four local electoral areas. The Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of Limerick, which covers the administrative area of Limerick City and its suburbs and hinterland in the counties of Limerick and Clare and Tipperary, had a population of 224,000 inhabitants in 2002.
