Cork

Cork, comprising Cork City and its suburbs in county Cork, had a population of just over 186,000 according to the results of the 2002 Census of Population. Cork – the second largest city in the country - is the industrial, cultural, commercial and tourist centre of the southern region of the country. Cork’s manufacturing industry is sustained by the high standards of the pharmaceutical, electronic and information sectors. The housing and construction industry is also an important sector for the economic growth of the city. The city is developing its business, commerce and financial services and port facilities. Cork City has an elected council of 31 members, including the Lord Mayor. The Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of Cork, which covers the administrative area of Cork City and its suburbs and hinterland, had a population of 311,000 in 2002.
