Nyíregyháza

Nyíregyháza is the easternmost large town in Hungary. With a population of almost 120,000, it has the seventh largest urban population in Hungary. Nyíregyháza is located in the Northern Great Plain, the second least developed region in Hungary. The service sector now dominates the economy of the city, which used to have an agricultural character. Several large engineering industrial plants have moved to Nyíregyháza’s industrial park in the past few years. Food processing and the manufacture of rubber products are significant activities. The population of Nyíregyháza is now increasing, the city’s areas built up by detached houses are experiencing a dynamic growth. City administration is the responsibility of the mayor and the 35 representatives. Nyíregyháza is the centre of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) consisting of 36 settlements, with a population of 222,000 inhabitants.
