Miskolc

Miskolc is the centre of Northern Hungary and is the third most populated city in the country, with a population of 184,000. Traditional heavy industry (mining, manufacture of basic iron and steel) played a dominant role in the city’s economy until the end of the 1980s. The role of small- and medium-sized enterprises has now increased and significant investments have occurred, allowing new economic activities to develop in the city. A number of modern shopping centres and many service activities have opened up. Tourism also offers great potential. With the motorway constructed, the city has been integrated into the European transport network. The city is also home to The University of Miskolc, a major provincial higher educational institution. The mayor and the 47 elected representatives are responsible for the city administration. Miskolc is part of a larger urban zone with a population of 282,000 covering an area of 1,006 km2.
