Larissa

Larisa is the capital of the prefecture of Larisa. It has a population of 133,000, which makes it the fifth most populous city of Greece. The city is built on the site of the ancient city, on the banks of the river Peneus. Larisa is the focus of most of the Thessalia region’s commercial, industrial and tourist activities and its associated trade and retail services. The city’s economy is also based heavily on the public sector (i.e. mainly public administration). Larisa’s municipal council administers the city and represents the inhabitants of Larisa. However, central government is still responsible for areas such as planning, economic development and the environment. Larisa is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of 282,000 inhabitants.
