Iraklio

Irakleio is the capital of Crete and the largest city of the island, with a population of 142,000. The city is the transport hub of Crete and includes a very busy international airport and sea port, carrying significant passenger volumes. Much of the city’s revenue emanates from the tourist industry, although light industry and agriculture are located in the periphery of the city. Irakleio’s municipal council administers the city and represents the inhabitants of Irakleio. However, central government is still responsible for areas such as planning, economic development and the environment. Irakleio is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) that contains 291,000 inhabitants.
