Patra

Patra is the capital of the Achaia prefecture and is the largest city in the Peloponnese region of Greece. The city has a population of 172,000. Historically, Patra was one of the major industrial centres of Greece, with the second largest port in the country in terms of sea travel (after Pireaus). Now tourism plays a major part in the city’s economy, with significant tourist numbers passing through the port, en route for the Ionian Islands and Italy. Other important employers in the city are the university and the hospital. The municipal council administers the city and represents the inhabitants of Patra. However, central government is still responsible for planning, development, the environment and other major issues. Patra is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of 319,000 inhabitants.
