Thessaloniki

The city of Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece and the economic capital of Macedonia in northern Greece. The city has a population of 385,000. The city is a significant industrial centre, second to Athens. In addition to its dynamic industrial sector, jobs in the service sector are also increasing. Trade, distribution and logistics play an important role in the city’s economy, as the city aims to become one of the most modern transportation nodes in south-eastern Europe. The municipal council administers the city and represents the inhabitants of Thessaloniki. However, central government is still responsible for areas such as planning, economic development and the environment. Thessaloniki is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of over one million inhabitants.
