Athina

Athina is the capital of Greece and has a population of 789,000. Athina’s economy is largely service-orientated around sectors such as finance, banking, insurance and real estate. The city is aiming to attract enough foreign direct investment to sustain substantial growth in these areas. The 2004 Olympic Games are having a major impact on the development of the city in terms of investment and infrastructure. The city is governed by two tiers of local government: the municipalities and the prefectures. Greater Athina is composed of over 90 municipalities, one of which is the city of Athina, as well as four prefectures. Athina’s Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) includes the city of Athina and its surrounding NUTS 3 ‘nomos’, excluding the islands that belong to Nomos Attikis. The LUZ contains nearly 3.9 million inhabitants.
