Grenoble

The city of Grenoble (Grenoble Alpes Metropole) is located in the département of Isère, part of the Rhône Alpes region. It has a population of 374,922. The economy of Grenoble is characterised by various industrial sectors including wholesale trade, services to industries and the construction sectors. Information technologies, the bio-medical sector and the energy sector are also considered important drivers of the city’s growth. Another key feature of Grenoble’s economy is that a significant proportion of the city’s firms consist of small to medium sized companies. The Communauté d’Agglomération called ‘Grenoble Alpes Metropole’ is composed of 23 communes and its objective is to encourage cooperation between the local authorities especially in terms of economic development, planning, transport and tourism. The mayors of the communes elect a President who heads the public organisation. Grenoble is part of a larger urban zone (LUZ) of 514,559 inhabitants that covers an area of 1602 km2, and is based on the French concept of ‘aire urbaine’.
