Limoges

The city of Limoges (Communauté d’Agglomération de Limoges) is the principal city of the département of Haute-Vienne, part of the Limousin region. The city has a population of 184,241. Limoges is famous for its traditional know-how in enamel and china production. However, the city is reshaping its economy and investing in research and development activities with currently over 100 R&D firms and one main science and technology park ‘Ester’. Limoge’s economy is also characterised by its public sector, with 41% of employment in public administration, health and education. The Communauté d’Agglomération de Limoges is composed of several communes and its objective is to encourage cooperation between the local authorities especially in terms of economic development, planning, transport and tourism. The mayors of the communes elect a President who heads the public organisation. Limoges is part of a larger urban zone (LUZ) which contains nearly 250,000 inhabitants, and is based on the French concept of ‘aire urbaine’.
