Poitiers

The city of Poitiers (Communauté d’Agglomération de Poitiers) is located in the département of Vienne, part of the Poitou-Charentes region. The city has a population of 123,589. The economy of Poitiers is centred around specific sectors of the economy such as ICT and new technologies, construction and civil engineering, trade, tourism, business support services, industrial logistics and the car industry. Poitiers is well known for its university, which accounts for a large number of students in relation to its size. The creation of the ‘futuroscope’ (a park that combines science, technology, education and entertainment) has been at the heart of the city’s economic success. The ‘Communauté d’Agglomération de Poitiers’ is made up of ten communes and its objective is to encourage cooperation between the different municipal councils especially in terms of economic development, planning, transport and tourism. The mayors of the communes elect a President who heads the public organisation. Poitiers is part of a larger urban zone (LUZ) of 209,216 inhabitants that covers an area of 1761 km2, based on the French concept of ‘aire urbaine’.
