Montpellier

The city of Montpellier (Montpellier Agglomération) is located in the département of the Hérault, part of the Languedoc Roussillon region. The city has a population of 412,891. Tourism, hotels and the catering industry accounts for much of the city’s growth. However, the service sector also plays an important role in the economy of the city. Montpellier is a major R&D centre for biomedical, life sciences and pharmaceutical industries. The three main biomedical research areas in Montpellier are AIDS, cancer and diabetes. ICT and agronomy are the other two important drivers of the city’s growth. The Communauté d’Agglomération called ‘Montpellier Agglomération’ is composed of 38 municipalities that take joint decisions on issues of urban management such as public transport and other sustainable development initiatives. The mayors of the communes elect a President who heads the public organisation. Montpellier is part of a larger urban zone (LUZ) of 459,916 inhabitants that covers an area of 1522 km2, and is based on the French concept of ‘aire urbaine’.
