Nantes

The city of Nantes (Communauté Urbaine de Nantes) is located in the département of Loire Atlantique, part of the Pays-de-Loire region on France's Atlantic seaboard. It has a population of 554,478. The port of Nantes has formed a strategic alliance with St-Nazaire’s port authority and together they form the Port Atlantique that has created in excess of 20,000 jobs. Electric and electronic activities combined with the metallurgical industry (shipbuilding, aerospace) represent the industrial core of Nantes. Agro-processing industries, NTICs and biotechnologies have also developed in connection with research laboratories. The service sector (finance, business services) however has expanded considerably and now dominates the city’s economy. The ‘Communauté Urbaine de Nantes’ is composed of 24 municipalities that take joint decisions on issues of urban management such as public transport and other sustainable development initiatives. The mayors of the communes elect a President who heads the public organisation. Nantes is part of the larger urban zone (LUZ) of 711,120 inhabitants that covers an area of 1838 km2.
