Toulouse

The city of Toulouse (Communauté d’Agglomération du Grand Toulouse) is located in the département of Haute-Garonne, part of the Midi-Pyrénées region. As France’s fourth largest city, Toulouse has a population of 583,229. The aeronautic industry is Toulouse’s main economic driver. Foreign businesses such as Motorola and major companies in the space industry such as Arianespace have contributed to Toulouse’s aeronautic and space initiatives. Other important sectors include the chemical and the pharmaceutical industries, followed by the electronics industry, biotechnology and information technologies. Research and development activities are also very important with 10,500 people working in more than 400 research units. Only a quarter of the labour force is employed in the industrial sector. The Communauté d’Agglomération du Grand Toulouse is made up of 25 communes and its objective is to encourage cooperation between the different municipal councils especially in terms of economic development, planning, transport and tourism. The mayors of the communes elect a President who heads the public organisation. The city is part of a larger urban zone (LUZ) that contains over 950,000 inhabitants.
