Oulu

Oulu is the capital of the Oulu province and the largest city in northern Finland. It city has a population of 123,000. The public administration sector is the city’s largest employer with over 8,000 people working for the city council. Traditionally furs, salmon and the production of tar were the city’s largest exports. Today, Oulu is developing into a leading centre of competence for northern Europe, attracting high technology industries. Oulu has one of the biggest universities in Finland and is home to many public and private research institutes. The elected members of the council run the city, with administrative support from the city board. Oulu is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of 193,000 inhabitants.
