Badajoz

Badajoz is the capital city of the Spanish autonomous community of Extremadura, close to the Portuguese border. It has a population of 136,000. The cultivation of fruit and olives as well as the production of wine characterises the city’s economy. Local industries include the manufacturing of woollen and cotton materials, soaps, oils, cork and leather. Commerce and trade are key to Badajoz’s economy, with much trade transiting to and from Portugal. Badajoz’s hinterland possesses more livestock than any other Spanish region and is well known for its ham and bacon. The city council of Badajoz governs and administers the city. The city council exercises joint powers with the regional authorities of Extremadura including decisions on housing, planning, welfare and heritage issues. Badajoz is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of 664,000 inhabitants.
