Toledo

Toledo is the capital of the province of Toledo and of the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha, southwest of Madrid. It has a population of 69,000. Capital of the Spanish empire until the 16th century, Toledo has been declared a national heritage site by the Spanish government and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The city also has one of the oldest universities in Spain. The most famous industry in Toledo is the manufacture of Damascene swords. Other economic activities include beer, confectionery, the production of church ornaments, textiles, bricks, and fans. The municipal council of Toledo is elected every four years. The city council exercises joint powers with the regional authorities including decisions on housing, planning, welfare and heritage issues. Toledo is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of 536,000 inhabitants.
