Santander

Santander is the capital of the autonomous community of Cantabria, located on the north coast of Spain, between Asturias (to the West) and the Basque Country (to the East). The city has a population of 185,000. Santander is a port as well as being a seaside resort. The city is driven by the shipping trade, as well as the metallurgy and the paper industries. Tourism also plays an important role in the city’s economy. The municipal authority of Santander is elected every four years. The city council exercises joint powers with the regional authorities including decisions on housing, planning, welfare and heritage issues. Santander is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of 538,000 inhabitants.
