Vitoria/Gasteiz

Vitoria-Gasteiz is the capital city of the province of Alava in northern Spain and of the autonomous community of the Basque Country. It has a population of 219,000. Vitoria-Gasteiz is well situated on the main rail line from Madrid to France, as well as to the port of San Sebastian. It is a commercial and manufacturing centre situated in an agricultural region. The key industries relate to the production of processed food, machinery, and timber items. The municipal council of Vitoria-Gasteiz is elected every four years. The city council exercises joint powers with the regional authorities including decisions on housing, planning, welfare and heritage issues. Vitoria-Gasteiz is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of 289,000 inhabitants.
