Zaragoza

The city of Saragossa is situated in the autonomous community of Aragon and has a population of 611,000. Its position between the cities of Madrid and Barcelona has helped the city strengthen its economy and reinforce its strategic role as an important regional centre. A relatively high proportion of the population is employed in the industrial sector. Construction was traditionally an important engine of the local economy, along with heavy industry, but the share of employment in these sectors has decreased. Today, new high-tech industries have replaced traditional industrial activities. The municipal authority of Saragossa is made up of 31 representatives and is elected every four years. The city council exercises joint powers with the regional authorities including decisions on housing, planning, welfare and heritage issues. Saragossa is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of just under 858,000 inhabitants.
