Tartu

Tartu — ‘the City of Good Thoughts’ — is the second largest city in Estonia with a population of 101,000. On a regional scale Tartu is the centre of the whole of southern Estonia. Tartu has developed into an important educational, scientific, medical and cultural centre for the country. Tartu has scientific research institutes, business services, a well-developed physical infrastructure, as well as numerous industrial enterprises. The timber and furniture industries, garment manufacturing, food processing, chemicals, the production of building materials and printing are all important economic activities. The City Council of Tartu is the representative body of the Municipal Government and has 49 members. The City Council has many important responsibilities such as the adoption and amendment of the city budget, the adoption of the city development plan and other detailed proposals. Tartu is part of a larger urban zone (LUZ) with a population of almost 149,000 covering an area of 2,993 km² (not including the area of Lake Võrtsjärv).
