Tallinn

Tallinn is the capital city of the Republic of Estonia. The city is located on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland and has a population of 400,000, which accounts for 29.2% of the Estonian population. The importance of Tallinn to Estonia’s economy is overwhelming. The city’s prime location between other European countries and Russia in addition to its good transport and communication network has favoured the rapid development of both transit trade and the general economy. Food processing, textile production, engineering and electronics account for a high share of manufacturing industries in Tallinn. Tallinn City Council is the representative body of Tallinn and has 63 elected members. The responsibilities of Tallinn City Council are to approve amendments to the budget, impose local taxes and to approve, amend and adopt the development plans. Tallinn is part of a larger urban zone (LUZ) with a population of 525,000 covering an area of 4,333 km².
