Kiel

Kiel is the capital of the German State of Schleswig-Holstein and has a population of 230,000. It is the most important service and educational centre of this state and for this region between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Almost three out of four employed people work in these industries. Kiel is also a financial centre. It has a university, a polytechnic and a training college with around 27,000 students. Kiel engages in new technologies like healthcare and bio-technology and in maritime economy. More than half the ICT companies of the state are located in the Kiel region.

The Baltic Sea stretches right to the city centre. Here, on Kieler Förde, one of the world’s greatest sailing events takes place every year. Kiel is Germany’s biggest port for boat cruises with daily arrivals and departures also of gigantic ferry boats from and to Norway and Sweden. The Kiel Canal connecting the North Sea with the Baltic Sea is the world’s busiest artificial waterway.

Kiel is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined by the Urban Audit, that covers an area of 3387 km² and contains 642,000 inhabitants.
