Mainz

Mainz acts as the western gate of the Rhine-Main area. As the state capital of Rheinland-Pfalz, the university city has a population of 185,000. A mix of businesses characterises the economy of Mainz but the city mostly supports a service-orientated economy, with an emphasis on the media sector (especially ZDF, the second public German television programme). Mainz is also the home to a growing number of high tech companies. Ministries and governmental agencies of Rheinland-Pfalz’s government are seated in Mainz. The city is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined by the Urban Audit, of 377,000 inhabitants that covers an area of 704 km2.
