Mönchengladbach

Mönchengladbach is located in the middle of the Düsseldorf - Cologne - Aachen triangle in the German federal state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (North-Rhine Westphalia). The city has a population of 263,000. The economy of the city was traditionally based on the textile industry. New industries are now focusing on fashion, electrical engineering, biomedicine, automobile component supplies, media and communications. Business services are also an important area of the economy, and are characterised by a pre-dominance of small and medium-size companies. Due to the dominance of the big centres in the surrounding area, the city could not be assigned its own Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) as defined in the Urban Audit. Nevertheless, there is an intensive exchange with the surrounding area containing about 600,000 inhabitants.
