Erfurt

Erfurt is the capital and an economic and cultural centre of the German federal state of Thüringen (Thuringia). The city has a population of just over 200,000. The economy of Erfurt is characterised by manufacturing and the growth of the service sector. Ministries and almost all governmental agencies of Thüringen’s government are seated in Erfurt. The main sectors of the city’s economy are electrical and mechanical engineering, the food industry, construction, and gardening and seed cultivation. Tourism is also an important driver of the city’s economy. The city is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined by the Urban Audit, of 552,000 inhabitants that covers an area of 2,852 km2.
