Freiburg im Breisgau

Freiburg is located between the Black Forest and the Rhine valley in the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg. The city has a population of 208,000. The city has built a considerable know-how in the area of environmental technology and industry. As a result, Freiburg is known as the ‘environmental capital’ of Germany. The 550 year-old university and 4 other colleges with a total of 27,000 students have a strong influence on the city’s economic and cultural life. Freiburg is the centre of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined in the Urban Audit, of almost 600,000 inhabitants and an area of 2,212 km2.
