Mülheim an der Ruhr

Mülheim is located in the German federal state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine-Westphalia). The city has a population of 172,000. Mülheim was badly affected by the structural crisis in the Ruhr area and the closures of many collieries. Today, Mülheim possesses a many-faceted industrial sector, orientated towards export which places great emphasis on innovative technology. Mülheim is home to some important high tech industries and companies. Mülheim is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined by the Urban Audit, of over 5.3 million inhabitants which corresponds to the Ruhr area.
