Wuppertal

Wuppertal borders the southern edge of the Ruhr area in close proximity to larger cities such as Düsseldorf and Cologne. The city belongs to the federal state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine Westphalia) and has a population of 365,000. Wuppertal has a strong industrial tradition, which continues to the present day. Key sectors include metal manufacturing, mechanical engineering, automotive supply, and the health industry (pharmaceuticals, medical engineering). The service sector revolves around business service provision, commerce, insurance and also communication and event management. Wuppertal was, in spite of its strong links, not considered part of the Ruhr area but rather belonging to a city triangle with the neighbouring cities of Remscheid and Solingen. As these cities were not included in the Urban Audit, the city was therefore not assigned a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ).
