Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf is the capital of Nordrhein-Westfalen (North-Rhine Westphalia) and one of the most important economic and cultural centres of this federal state. The city has a population of 571,000. Düsseldorf employs a large proportion of its workforce in the service sector (especially finance and insurance). It is the seat of the ministries and other governmental agencies of the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen. Many international trade fairs take place in Düsseldorf every year, around half of them of international importance. The city has also built considerable know-how in the fields of ICT, media, fashion, advertising, trade and bio-technology industries. The city is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined by the Urban Audit, that covers an area of 1,200 km2 and contains over 1.5 million inhabitants.
