Dortmund

Dortmund is located at the heart of the German federal state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine Westphalia) on the east side of the Ruhr area. The city has a population of almost 590,000. Over the last 25 years, Dortmund’s traditionally industrial-based economy has progressively moved to the service sector. Nowadays, the city’s know-how is concentrated on sectors such as insurance, logistics, software development, multimedia, microstructure technology, engineering and telecommunications. The city’s science district includes the University, Dortmund Technology Centre and Dortmund Technology Park (with 230 companies and 8,700 employees) that symbolise the recent transformations of the city’s economy. Dortmund is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined by the Urban Audit, of over 5.3 million inhabitants which corresponds to the Ruhr area.
