Dresden

Dresden is the capital and an important economic and cultural centre of the German federal state of Sachsen (Saxony). The city has a population of almost 480,000. Dresden’s economy is characterised by a wide range of industrial sectors. The key sectors that shape the city’s economy include microelectronics, communications and information technology, pharmaceutical industry, environmental engineering, biotechnology and the development and manufacturing of new materials. Today, the Dresden region has the strongest engineering and natural sciences R&D sector in eastern Germany. Ministries and most governmental agencies of Sachsen’s government are seated in Dresden. The city is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined for the Urban Audit, that covers an area of 2,600 km2 and contains over 903,000 inhabitants.
