The City of Stuttgart is the capital of the German State of Baden-Württemberg. From a national and an international perspective, it is an outstanding economic and cultural centre, with a population of 590,000, and the core of the Stuttgart Region.
The city and the Region are renowned for their innovative capacity and high-tech industries, especially in car manufacturing and its supply industries (a. o. Daimler, Porsche, Bosch). The Stuttgart stock exchange ranks second in Germany after Frankfurt. Numerous banks and insurance companies are also located here as well as several universities and colleges.
Stuttgart is also a spa and has, after Budapest, the strongest wells of mineral water in Europe. With its neighbourhood of the Black Forest and the Swabian Alps, its setting amidst vineyards, parks and woods, its hills and valleys, Stuttgart offers a high quality of life. Its natural living conditions are accompanied by a high-quality cultural life with a state theatre, music halls, galleries and museums as well as a Casino.
Stuttgart is the centre of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined by the Urban Audit, that covers an area of 3654 km² and contains 2.7 million inhabitants. This region is, after the “Ruhrgebiet” and the Berlin region, the third largest in Germany.
