Frankfurt am Main

With a population of around 641,000, Frankfurt am Main is the fifth largest city in Germany and the largest city of the federal state of Hessen. The city is located in the Rhine-Main Region, economically one of the most powerful regions in Europe. Frankfurt’s influence carries far beyond the neighbouring Kreise and the Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined for this project, of over 2.4 million inhabitants. Frankfurt is the centre of Germany’s banking and service sectors. Since 1998, the European Central Bank has its headquarters in the city. The Frankfurt Stock Exchange is the largest in continental Europe and one of the largest in the world. The city is host to many trade fairs and is Germany’s key telecommunication and transport hub. Over 50 important scientific institutions also make the city an important science centre.
