München

München is the capital as well as the economic and cultural centre of the German federal state of Bayern (Bavaria). The city has a population of over 1.2 million, making it the third largest city in Germany. The city is predominantly active in IT, electronics, communication networks, life sciences, and microelectronics. It is seat of the European Patent Office and the German Patent Office. The city has one of the largest concentrations of research institutions in Germany, including two universities, and an important R&D sector which accounts for a large proportion of the city’s workforce. All ministries and almost all governmental agencies of Bayern’s government are seated in München. The city is the centre of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined by the Urban Audit, that covers an area of 5,500 km2 and contains over 2.4 million inhabitants.
