Berlin

Berlin is the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany and one of the country’s 16 federal states (Länder). The city has a population of nearly 3.4 million inhabitants. Since reunification of East and West Germany and the fall of the Berlin Wall, Berlin has once again become the German capital. The German Federal Parliament, most ministries, government agencies and embassies, as well as NGOs and business representations moved to Berlin. Enormous investments in Berlin’s infrastructure are still going on. Once dominated by industrial production, Berlin’s economy is now characterised by important investments in transport technology, bio-technology, medical and environmental technology, and the media. There has also been an increase in tourism and trade fair conventions. The Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of Berlin unites the adjoining NUTS3 units (Kreise) covering an area of 17,405 km2 of over 4.9 million inhabitants.
